Sherry continues her report on Banter Gebang, South East Asia’s largest landfill and home to 3,000 families. She visit the landfill as part of her journalism placement in Indonesia, Jakarta over the summer. This week, she talks to Resa Boenard, the founder of BGBJ, the school on Bantar Gebang. Ibu Rastinah, one of the women who work at the plastic sorting companies on the landfill, and the children of the class she helped out with.

Is the Green Party out of touch with Pacific voters?

Is the Green Party out of touch with Pacific people? Well, AUT journalism lecturer Richard Pamatatau seems to think so. In an article written for E-Tangata, Pamatatau says the Greens do not do enough to reach out to Pacific voters and that the fact only two Pacific candidates are on the list is a reflection that the party is indeed out of touch. Pamatatau says the Greens have much to learn about engaging with the Pacific population, and the list placing of Leilani Tamu (20) and Teanau Tuiono (19) is evidence of that. In the article Pamatatau also claims that Green delegates were given a special instruction by the party's general secretary to ensure 22-year-old Chloe Swarbrick secured a top place. Reporter Sam Smith spoke to Pamatatau about his claims.

Kith and Kin w/ Season Gallery co-curator, Francis McWhannell: 2nd August, 2024

Kith and Kin is a new group exhibition at Season Gallery with brunelle dias, Tony Guo, Levi Kereama, Claudia Kogachi, and the esteemed Jacqueline Fahey.

Testifying to the importance of strengthening community, Kith and Kin comprises stylistically diverse figure-based paintings exploring notions of family and friendship, ancestry and diaspora, identity and belonging. 

Emblems of faith, evocative interiors, fields seen from the sky, and items of food both everyday and symbolic can be seen as common elements in the works.

Sofia spoke to Season Gallery co-curator, Francis McWhannell, about Kith and Kin, starting the interview asking him about the process for selecting artists.

The Camellia Society w/ Karin Montgomery: 4th July, 2025

Karin Montgomery is a craft-based artist, working from a background in textiles, interior design and her innate passion for ecology.

Montgomery shows an attentiveness to her ecological surroundings, and prides herself as a gardener and an observer with always an interest in making.

As an observer, Montgomery has drawn close attention to the Camellia flower within her current exhibition at Object Space, The Camellia Society. The show presents ten beautifully detailed hand-crafted replica paper Camellias that line the gallery in an ode to a garden.

Paying close attention to a normally overlooked Camellia plant, Karin puts its beauty to the forefront, reminding us of the little nuggets of beauty sitting right in our backyard. Inviting viewers to engage with attentiveness and to become observers of the beauty within our own ecological surroundings.
