2021 has been a big year for Covid-related news. And as we emerge from a 107-day lockdown (wow!), now's a good time to look back on some interesting Covid-19 stories from this year.

First, Jemima spoke to Te Pāti Māori co-leader, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, on the inequities faced by Māori as the vaccine rollout continues.

Then, Joe spoke to Kate Hannah, lead researcher for The Disinformation Project, about the rise in misinformation in our online spaces and the increasing polarisation in society when it comes to Covid-19.

New Research on Children's Exposure to Advertising Emerges w/ Leah Watkins: January 19, 2022

Advertising: it's a huge part of our day-to-day lives, even when we're not actively consuming. Concerningly, it seems many children are now frequently exposed to the oversaturation of brands and marketing in our lives. A new study from the University of Otago has found children are exposed to five hundred and fifty four brands a day, which equals to almost one brand every sixty seconds. This study is the first glimpse into how children are exposed to marketing on a daily basis.

Christina spoke with Associate Professor Leah Watkins, who co-led the study, about what these results mean for consumer culture and our society.

The Fight Against Food Waste in Australia and Aotearoa: February 2, 2022

With tonnes of edible food being thrown out yearly, food waste is a massive issue to tackle. Leading the fight against food waste are academics and organisations aiming to reduce the burden on our planet.

Reporter Christina Huang spoke with Ellen Fogarty from Flinders University in Adelaide, about a recent study she conducted on food waste recycling in the hospitality sector. She also spoke to some of the people leading the fight against food waste: Nick Loosley, founder of Everybody Eats; Madeleine Cull from For the Love of Bees; and Gavin Findlay, CEO of KiwiHarvest. They discussed their vision for reducing food waste in Aotearoa and society's shifting mindset towards sustainability.

IPCC Climate Change Report: March 1, 2022

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has recently released a new report, the second of three reports. The 2022 report focuses on climate change impacts, adaptaion and vulnerability, looking at ecosystems and human communities. it reviewed how vulnerable we are and how well the natural world and human societies can adapt to climate change.

Christina Huang spoke to Professor Bronwyn Hayward and Professor Anita Wreford, two researchers from Aotearoa who worked on the climate change report.

Three years on from the Christchurch attacks, Islamophobia still persists in our society, affecting the way of life for those in the Muslim Community. The Third Islamophobia in Australia report released this morning has highlighted the increase in online and offline abuse in recent years despite the horrors of March 15th 2019.

 

Trishil spoke with Dr Mohammad Ridwan from the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand about the fallout of the attacks, discussing the recent abuse of Otago student Hoda-Al Jammar, and how islamophobia can be challenged in the future.

At an international climate summit in Germany, experts urged the world to transition towards plant-based diets. 

IPCC research has shown that an uptake in such plant-based diets having the potential to massively reduce carbon emissions, and could be one of the major lifestyle changes necessary to combat climate change.

Casper spoke to Claire Insley, spokesperson for the Vegan Society of Aotearoa, about the impact of our diets on climate change and how it might be possible to reduce emissions by having more people transition to plant-based.
