Today on the Greendesk Bronnie spoke to representatives from School Strikes for Climate New Zealand about their online strike event this Friday. May 15th will be the fourth time New Zealand youths will strike, inspired by Swedish teengager GretaThunberg’s “Friday’s for Future” movement.  Coco Lovatt from Avondale College and Oli Morphew from Wellington Girls’ College were both involved with the historical strikes last September which saw 170,000 people take to the streets nationwide. 

You can join the online strike this Friday May 15th  by going along to their Facebook event. They are also encouraging people to sign their open letter to the government to adopt a Green Covid Response, and also the Greenpeace petition to the same effect.

On Friday the Waitangi Tribunal released an interim report which called for the ACT Party’s controversial Treaty Principals Bill to be scrapped. 

Some of the tribunal’s findings said the bill "is a solution to a problem that does not exist, it is fashioned upon a disingenuous historical narrative ;its policy rationales are unsustainable ; and its current text distorts the language of the Treaty / Te Tiriti.” 

Despite all of this, ACT Party leader David Seymour has welcomed the criticism, saying he’s open to encouraging ‘discussion and debate’ around the topic. 

For the weekly catch up with the ACT Party Producer Evie spoke to Simon Court why the party intends to move forward with the bill, in light of these scathing findings. 

They also discussed new sanctions for beneficiaries announced by the government last week, and why the ACT Party believes these should be even stricter than proposed. 

In 2023, artists Charlie Thomas, Rose Lasham, Peregrin Hyde and Tegan Allpress travelled to South Georgia, an island in the Atlantic Ocean.

I had a kōrero with two of the artists who embarked on the expedition: Peregrin Hyde and Tegan Allpress. They created art there – or upon their return – based on their interpretations of the remote island. This art will be part of the exhibition Into Ocean & Ice, opening next week at the New Zealand Maritime Museum.

Hyde is a multidisciplinary artist based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Aotearoa. His practice, which combines art and science, responds to the alarming rates of Antarctic ice melt, which reached historic lows in 2023. Tegan Allpress (Ngāti Whakaue, Rongowhakaata) is a film photographer focused on the concept of tūrangawaewae.

Into Ocean & Ice opens at the New Zealand Maritime Museum on November 29th.
