Learning new things can do wonders for elderly mental health but, c'mon guys, learning new things can be _hard_. Our guest, a doctoral student from the University of Auckland who is studying dance and brain function, says: not necessarily. Kate's area of study is poi, an evolution of traditional Māori mahi poi, and how it can be applied to bolster the acuity, strength, balance and mental health of our aging population.

New Zealand has one of the highest incidences of brain concussion in the world (sup rugby). Yet not only is there is no accepted treatment available, there's often argument as to what even constitutes 'a concussion'. Dr. Shim's research is gathering data from the frontlines of head injury (sup rugby) and information from the behaviour of concussed brain cells within the animal kingdom to discover new potential for concussion treatments in humans. Best put down the Jackass VHS though - prevention's still the best cure.

While the health benefits of dance seem obvious, there is little specific data available to determine how movement and dance can help mental wellbeing. With that in mind, Carlene's been taking the tapedeck on the reg to the retirement home (and other places) in order to glean her own doctoral research. Should we all have more lambada in our lounges?

Dana talks to Mikey about companies sharing their secrets. While larger companies can afford a better breed of research and development, smaller companies are far more flexible to remain cutting edge. But can they work together to mutual gain or will the competitive nature of business thwart any possible rewards?
