Turkey blocks early move to fast-track Finland and Sweden NATO membership

1:00pm on 19 May 2022

By Natalie Sheers

Turkey has blocked an early move to fast-track Finland and Sweden joining NATO.

This follows the nordic nations officially submitting their applications to join the military alliance.

Turkey affirms that the alliance respect its concerns, accusing the countries of extraditing terrorists.

The alliance says they want to move as fast as possible with the potential Russian threat to Finland and Sweden. But any expansion of NATO must be approved by all thirty members and their parliaments.

If successful, it would represent the most significant expansion of NATO in decades.
