Sir Tim Shadbolt has announced he will be making a dual run for both mayor and city council of Invercargill.
The 75-year-old has been an iconic Invercargill figure and boasts the title of the longest-serving mayor in Aotearoa.
In recent years, Shadbolt's leadership mired in controversy, with Invercargill councilors raising questions over whether he is still competent to hold office.
He will run against seven other candidates, including radio and television personality Marcus Lush, who announced a bid for mayor on Wednesday.
