National: Petition calling for expulsion of Russian ambassador delivered to parliament

7:30 am on Friday 12 August 2022

A petition has been delivered to Parliament, calling for the Russian Ambassador Georgii Zuev to be expelled, and for New Zealand to sever diplomatic relations with Russia.

Zuev has maintained his diplomatic role in New Zealand despite criticism from several political parties since the invasion of Ukraine began.

Friends of Ukraine spokesperson Roman Kashpir, who is behind the petition says that New Zealand should join a number of countries that have already thrown out Russian diplomats.

"All democracies should just expel whoever represents this terrorist state."

A 1News Kantar Public Poll in June found that almost half of New Zealanders support the expulsion of the ambassador.
