National: New Zealand border to fully re-open by end of July

Yesterday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that the border will fully reopen from July 31 at 11:59pm, which includes welcoming cruise ships and international students back into the country.

The border is currently only open to New Zealand citizens, residents, and visitors from visa-waiver countries. The new change will allow all tourists with visas into the country for the first time since the pandemic began.

The original date for the full border reopening was set for October but has now been brought forward by three months.

The PM said that the reason for this change is to provide a boost to the country's economy, which is in need of tourists and migrants.

“By helping to relieve urgent skills shortages, opening up tourism and putting our immigration settings on a more secure footing, we are building on our proven plan to secure New Zealand's economic future," Ardern said.

Ardern also seemed to suggest that pre-departure testing would be a thing of the past before the full border opening.
