Aotearoa has recorded over one million confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Ministry of Health.

However, experts say that reliance on self-testing and reporting means the actual number of COVID-19 infections could be two to four times higher.

This time last year, the total number of cases reported in New Zealand was 2288.

On January 23, when community transmission of Omicron was first reported, New Zealand had seen over 15,000 confirmed cases. This soared to a million in fewer than four months.
