The Sri Lankan President has appointed a new Prime Minister in an apparent attempt to deflect attention from his handling of the economic crisis.
The decision comes after the President refused calls to resign and announced intentions to restore nationwide peace.
Experts suggest the President chose Ranil Wickremesinge because he has close ties to the President's family and would likely provide them protection if protests escalated.
Sri Lankans are currently facing record-high food and fuel prices with the economy in freefall.
The appointment is being seen as another "arrogant response" to weeks of intensifying protests.
