International: Eastern Afghanistan Hit by 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan has killed over 1000 people and injured at least 1500. 

Rescuers are attemting to reach thousands of homes have been destroeyd in areas already facing a humanitarian crisis. 

Haibatullah Akhundzadah, the supreme leader of the Taliban, has made a rare plea to the United Nations for support.

The UN has deployed assessment teams and is preparing to provide more direct support.

The earthquake struck about 44 kilometers from the city of Khost and shaking was felt as far away as India and Pakistan. 

The last disaster of this kind in the country occurred in 2002, when a magnitearthquakeartquake killed over 1000 in Northern Afghanistan.
