Jesse Itzler is the author of Living with a SEAL: 31 Days Training with the Toughest Man on the Planet

About 99 percent of the people who start marathons finish them. That's an astoundingly high number considering the pain and turmoil that every marathon runner faces. What each runner has in common, says author Jesse Itzler, is that they hit a wall where their mental resources are exhausted. At this point, sheer physical will maintains their strength — this is the will that everyone has, but we seldom know how to tap into it.

Harris co-founded the movement for Time Well Spent to spark an important conversation to about the kind of future we want from the technology industry. He explains how Casinos, magicians, and the makers of social media platforms all know something about you: your mind is very vulnerable to influence. Just as the magician relies on limitations in your short term memory or visual acuity to accomplish sleight of hand, online software engineers leverage the limits of your mind to make their product addictive.

Richard Buckminister "Bucky" Fuller was an American architect, systems theorist, author, designer and inventor. Throughout his life, 1895-1983, he published over 30 books. The quote:

"We should do away with the absolutely specious notion that everybody has to earn a living. It is a fact today that one in ten thousand of us can make a technological breakthrough capable of supporting all the rest. The youth of today are absolutely right in recognising this nonsense of earning a living.

We keep inventing jobs because of this false idea that everybody has to be employed at some kind of drudgery because according to Malthusian Darwinian theory he must justify his right to exist. So we have inspectors of inspectors and people making instruments for inspectors to inspect inspectors.

The true business of people should be to go back to school and think about whatever it was they were thinking about before somebody came along and told them they had to earn a living."

The philosophy of Stoicism by Massimo Pigliucci

What is the best life we can live? How can we cope with whatever the universe throws at us and keep thriving? The ancient Greco-Roman philosophy of Stoicism explains that while we may not always have control over the events affecting us, we can have control over how we approach things. Massimo Pigliucci describes the philosophy of Stoicism and details the pursuit of self-improvement through 4 cardinal virtues:

  1. Wisdom - the ability to navigate complex situations in a logical, informed and calm manner
  2. Temperance - the exercise of self-restraint and moderation in all aspects of life
  3. Justice - treating others with fairness, even when they have done wrong
  4. Courage - not just in extraordinary circumstances, facing daily challenges with clarity and integrity

Psychologist Shawn Achor argues that happiness inspires productivity. He suggests that 75% of your success comes from your mental frameworks and the people you surround yourself with.

He explains that innate talent, intelligence, and external circumstances only account for 25% of your long-term success in business. The other 75% comes from just three things:

  1. Your mindset and outlook
  2. Your ability to perceive difficult situations as a challenge rather than a stressor
  3. Your social support system
